Connecting Mollie

Connect Mollie to Bas so customers can pay invoices directly online via iDEAL. Average payment time drops from 16 days to 1.2 days.

With Mollie, your customers can pay invoices directly online via iDEAL. A payment button appears in the invoice email and on the invoice page. The customer clicks, chooses their bank, and pays.

The effect is huge: companies that activate Mollie see their average payment time drop from 16 days to 1.2 days. That makes a real difference to your cash flow and to the work involved in chasing payment reminders.

What do you need?

  • A Mollie account (free to create)

  • Your Chamber of Commerce (KVK) number

  • Your business bank account

  • UBO identification - Mollie requires identification of the ultimate beneficial owner(s) (UBO). Make sure you have valid proof of identity to hand when creating your account

Step 1 - Creating a Mollie account

  1. Go to mollie.com and click Sign up

  2. Enter your company details (company name, KVK number, address)

  3. Verify your bank account

  4. Activate iDEAL as a payment method in your Mollie dashboard

Note: Only activate iDEAL. Credit card is technically possible, but the transaction fees are around 4%. That's far too expensive for most removal companies. iDEAL is by far the most used and cheapest option.

This takes about 10 minutes. Mollie checks your details, which can take up to one working day.

Step 2 - Connecting Mollie in Bas

  1. Go to Settings > Way of working > Integrations

  2. Find Mollie in the list

  3. Click Connect

  4. Log in with your Mollie account

  5. Click Save

The integration is now active.

Step 3 - Activating test mode

Before going live, you'll want to make a test payment to check that everything works. Mollie has a test mode for this.

  1. Click your account name in the Mollie section

  2. Set the switch to Test

  3. Test mode is now active

In test mode you can simulate payments without any real money being transferred.

Step 4 - Making a test payment

  1. Create a test invoice in Bas

  2. Send the invoice to your own email address

  3. Open the invoice email and click the payment button

  4. Go through the payment process (choose a bank, confirm)

  5. Go back to Bas and check whether the invoice status has been updated to Paid

If the status updates correctly, the integration works.

Note: Getting an error message during the test payment? Then the integration hasn't been activated yet. Check whether your Mollie account is fully verified and whether iDEAL is enabled as a payment method in your Mollie dashboard.

Step 5 - Switching off test mode at go-live

Note: This is the most critical step with Mollie. At one of our customers, test mode was still switched on after go-live. The result: all customers paid nicely via iDEAL, but no money came in. Every payment was a test payment. This wasn't discovered until a week later.

At go-live:

  1. Go to your Mollie settings in Bas

  2. Click your account name

  3. Set the switch from Test to Live

  4. Check with a real invoice whether the payment actually arrives in your bank account

Note: This point is on the go-live checklist. This is the most critical step at your go-live. If you forget this, everything appears to work but no money comes in.

How the customer pays

Customer receives invoice by email - Clicks "Pay directly via iDEAL" - Chooses bank - Pays via iDEAL - Automatically: invoice status changes to "Paid" in Bas - Customer receives payment confirmation

Payment methods on site

Mollie is one of two ways your customer can pay on site. The customer chooses which method they use.

Method

How it works

Suitable for

Manual

The foreman enters the payment method themselves, for example: cash, card or bank transfer

Flexible: all payment methods outside Mollie

Mollie (QR code)

Customer scans the QR code and pays via iDEAL

Fastest option, no extra hardware needed

Partial payment on site

The customer doesn't have to pay the full amount on site. A partial payment is possible: the customer pays part via the QR code, for example, and the remaining amount is automatically added to the invoice. Handy if the customer doesn't have the full amount with them, or if a subsequent recalculation is still to follow.

Cost of Mollie

  • No subscription costs

  • Transaction costs: EUR 0.25 per invoice (Bas costs) plus the standard Mollie transaction fees

Tips

  • Start with Mollie. The payment button in your invoices makes an immediate difference for your customers and improves your cash flow. Setting it up takes 10 minutes.

  • Test first, then go live. Use test mode to check that everything works before you go live.

  • About 40% of residential customers pay via the payment button. For commercial customers this percentage is lower - they usually pay through their own accounts department. The payment button is therefore especially valuable for your residential business.

Watch out for

  • Forgetting to switch off Mollie test mode is the most common mistake with integrations. Everything appears to work - customers pay, the status gets updated - but no money comes in. Always check at go-live that test mode is switched off.
